An introduction to Kansas City's newest source for news and entertainment

Hello, and thank you for checking out KCFreePress.com, Kansas City's newest source for news, reviews, event listings, photos, videos, music, and more. We've been working for the past few months to put together what we believe will be an engaging, entertaining and informative content mix. No matter what your interests or occupation, if you live in Kansas City, there's something here for you.

You might be wondering why anyone would want to launch a media outlet at a time when the news industry is turned on its head. Newspapers continue to shrink in size or disappear altogether, TV news ratings are down, and nobody seems to know what's next. It is, to say the least, a moment of great uncertainty for the industry. But rather than wringing our hands or waiting around, we wanted to create a Web site that Kansas Citians can enjoy, take part in and be proud of.

KCFreePress.com arises out of what we feel is a need for a locally-owned publication that takes full advantage of all the storytelling and information tools the Web has to offer. We plan to incorporate multimedia elements in as many stories as we can, using photos, video and audio to give each feature an added depth and color that you won't find anywhere else.

KCFreePress.com is unique in that it is built on the talents of local freelancers and bloggers as well as trained journalists. Rather than viewing blogs and other media sites in an "us vs. them" manner, we believe that the most dynamic content is produced when the immediacy and independence of blogs are combined with the professionalism and accountability of traditional reporting.

Because we recognize that people need a reliable, easy-to-use source for information about what’s happening around town, we’re building up our calendar listings to give you a highly searchable, easy-to-use tool to find the events you're interested in — or might not have heard about. I've always believed that Kansas City has a lot going on if you know where to look, and we want to be the first place you go to find out about events, concerts, performances, exhibits and other local happenings.

Over the next few weeks and months, we'll be unfurling new sections and features on opinion, sports, blogs, columns, multimedia features and more. In the meantime, we invite you to check out the site, create user profiles and submit events. And, of course, we hope you'll provide us with feedback about what you like and what you don't, what you think works well and what you'd like to see change.

Thanks again for taking part in what we believe is an exciting new chapter in Kansas City online media, and we hope you stop by often.

Is this a daily or a weekly publication? What are the benefits of subscribing to kcfreepress?

KCFreePress.com will be updated daily, with a few new stories added throughout the site Monday through Friday and at least one lead feature for each section every week. The benefits of subscribing will depend on the person, but I've found myself already using the calendar quite a bit already. Other than that — great stories, attractive photos, lots of video and much more to come in the future. Thanks for checking it out!
