This weekend is all about music in Kansas City. A few local KC bands will be throwing CD release parties this weekend, and some big name national acts will be stopping in town as well.

Friday, July 9

Local KC band, Soft Reeds, will be celebrating the release of their new album at the Record Bar on Friday night. Joining them will be the Lawrence band, Cowboy Indian Bear, and the Kansas City band Motorboater. The show begins at 10:00 p.m. and costs $7.

Cracker will be playing a free show at Kansas City Power & Light starting at 7:00 p.m.

Saturday, July 10

Hearts of Darkness, an eighteen piece band who create their groove using afro-beat, funk and soul rhythms will be celebrating the release of their newest album at the Crosstown Station on Saturday night. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 day of show.

Alternative band, Thrice, will be playing at the Midland Theater on Saturday. Joining them will be Kevin Devine, Bad Veins, and The Dig. Tickets are $19 each, and the show will begin at 8:00 p.m.

If you can’t decide whether you’d prefer to go to a national act or a local act, you can head to the Record Bar and see a hybrid of the two. Mark Lowrey will be presenting an interpretive tribute to Radiohead on Saturday night. Joining him will be local musicians Barclay Martin, Shay Estes, William Smith and more.

Saturday will be historic for Kansas City’s Folly Theater. “Burlesque Revival at the Folly” will take place featuring many professional performers including Voler, Thieves of Flight, Alacartoona, The Flock, Emily Frost, Lucky Deluxe, Jason Divad, The Lord Mayor’s Company and M’Chelle. This will be the first burlesque performance at the Folly since it closed for renovation in the 1970s. The theater was known as a center for burlesque during the city’s Red Light District history.

The NAACP Author Pavilion kicks off on Saturday at the Kansas City Convention Center. The pavilion provides a forum in which readers can meet authors, and create a collaborative effort to promote literature and arts education.

Nobody will be leaving the American Royal Wine Tasting and Brew HaHa entirely sober on Saturday. The event features samples of over 100 varieties of cold beer and wine. This year’s event also features a Texas Hold ‘Em tournament with a $1000 first prize. Tickets for the event are $25 in advance or $30 at the gate. Only people 21 and over are allowed in, of course. The event will take place at Hale Arena from 5-9 p.m.

Sunday, July 11

Rock superstars Pat Benatar and REO Speedwagon will be playing at the Starlight Theatre on Sunday, so if you missed the opportunity to see them live in the 80s, here’s your chance. Pat Benatar will also be at Rainy Day Books from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. to sign copies of her memoir, Between a Heart and a Rock Place.

The second concert in 96.5 the Buzz’s summer concert series, Buzz Under the Stars, takes place on Sunday, and will be featuring Sublime with Rome, Matisyahu and the Dirty Heads. The concert will take place at City Market. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and tickets are $35.
