I am hopeful that reports of the newspaper industry’s death are greatly exaggerated. While this article is written for an online newspaper, I’d like to use the online world to sing the praises of hard-copy, ink on paper newspapers. I believe in a peaceful co-existence of the two mediums. Newspapers are an important part of our societal fabric, and taking the tour of the Kansas City Star Press Pavilion is a good reminder of this fact.
A downtown landmark worth pointing out to friends visiting from other cities, the giant green glass Press Pavilion, located near the main Star building and built in 2006, houses one of the most modern and finest newspaper plants in the world. In addition to printing the Kansas City Star, the presses also print the Midwest edition of the Wall Street Journal, among other publications. The tour takes you through the history of the paper (which includes employees like Ernest Hemingway) along with a viewing of the presses. The presses weren’t running when we visited, but that didn’t diminish the enthusiasm of the group of boy scouts who were on our tour, and our guide, Star writer Lewis Diuguid provided us with a very informative and fun experience.
