There's more to enjoying Guinness Stout than a good pour and enjoying the great taste, brewmaster Fergal Murray says.
Before sampling the brew itself, Murray recommends that the Guinness drinker take a moment to admire what he calls "perfection in a glass."
"He wants to see beauty, and he wants to see that dark liquid and that wonderful creamy top."
If anyone should know how to pour the perfect pint of Guinness Stout, it's Murray. The head brewer for Dublin, Ireland-based Guinness was at Browne's Irish Market yesterday as part of his eight-city tour of the U.S.
The perfect pint is contingent on four steps, Murray said: A good pub atmosphere, a great bartender who understands the importance of a good pour (which has six steps of its own), visually appreciating the beverage, and, of course, enjoying the Irish stout's bold, distinctive taste.
Guinness, which is brewed in 51 countries and sold in 150, was an especially popular brew at the pre-St. Patrick's Day event at Browne's, the oldest operating Irish business in North America. In addition to pints of Guinness, event attendees enjoyed Irish food such as grilled bangers in a bun, and Irish music performed by the 3$Band.
"Browne's is a special special place," Murray said. "I can see the heartland of America has some serious Guinness fans. I love it."
