Spring is in the air
What to do in Kansas City this spring
Friday, March 26, 2010
Sniff, sniff. Smell that? It's the smell of spring. It may still be overpowered by all the gross, mean snow that tried to trample its arrival, but make no mistake, spring is here. And with it comes a fresh batch of fun events. Here are some things to do to get you into the swing of the season.
Take me out to the ballgame
Okay. Our city's poor, little baseball team has had a tough run. But, there is always this year, right?! Yea! Ahem. The Royals' season begins April 5. Perhaps you should get tickets for a home game.
Stop and smell the roses
Some days, I just like to walk around and enjoy the spring scenery. It's like free entertainment and exercise all in one! Here are a few places you can go to enjoy springtime flowers and a tasty lunch or coffee.
Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens
Walkin' the dog
You know who else loves springtime smells? Your dog. Here are a few parks in and around Kansas City that will allow your pups to run free. Just be sure it's in the park's designated doggie, off leash area.
Kansas:
Thomas S. Stoll Memorial Park, Overland Park
Missouri:
Wayside Waifs Bark, Park Kansas City

Earth Day's over the hill
So, you say you love the earth, eh? Show it by attending Kansas City's Earth Day event, hosted by Bridging The Gap. The event will take place in Theis Park on Sunday, April 11. Take a look at event details here.
It's all happening at the zoo
While the Kansas City Zoo is open year round, it's a bit more fun to walk around and gaze at the beasties when it's warm.
Get up, get out and see something
What's more enjoyable than listening to some soothing tunes outside and having a cold drink? Nothing, I say! Here are a few venues that'll be opening soon.
The Crossroads first show of the season is Reverend Horton Heat, Cracker, and Split Lip Rayfield on May 13.
Capitol Federal Park at Sandstone's first show of the season is The Flaming Lips, The Dead Weather, Minus the Bear, and White Rabbits on April 23.
While these bars don't necessarily have big acts play outside, they are still enjoyable establishments. Grab a drink on the porch, and listen to a DJ spin songs:
The Beaumont's Back Yard, Kansas City, Mo.
Riot Room's outdoor stage
The Foundry, Kansas City, Mo.
Worlds of Fun
Sure, it's a bit broken down and not as fun since the evil roller coaster takers took the Zambezi Zinger humph but, it's still fun to visit every so often. The park of amusement will open for the season on April 17.
